Women Stand up

And be mothers not mommas

Teach, love, and protect your child

Stand up for child

They need you now more than ever

Men of all races

Stand up and be real men

Stop playing around with cars and drugs

Go home and give your sons hugs

Raise ‘em not to be thugs

Men stand up

And be fathers and not daddies

Teach love and provide for your families

Stand up for your child crying at night

Stand up and tell them everything

Is going to be alright

Stand up everyone

Let’s save our kids, our future and our world

After reading that poem, she wanted me to read it in front of my peers. With me being a nervous public speaker, I chose to do a power point presentation. I went into the library and recorded myself reading my poem.

As I pressed play on the recording in front of my peers, I was shaking like a leaf in the winter. The whole time while I was waiting for the recording to end, I was standing in front of the class with my head down playing with my nails.

So imagine my surprise when the recording ended and the praises began. I calmly smiled and welcomed the joyous praises on the outside while pretending that I had just won the Pulitzer Prize. Like fellow African American poets, Maya Angelou and Gwendolyn Brooks.

Ever since I received praises for my poem in class. I had students wanting me to write poems for their boyfriends or girlfriends. Raymond thought I should charge them for my poems. After taking what he said into consideration, I began selling original love poems for two dollars. Unfortunately for me two dollars wasn’t a lot of money and I needed money.

So I started working at Insite Support Services as an Internet Technical Support Customer Service Representative. Once I started my first job there, I had to stop writing poems because I didn’t have the extra time anymore.

With Basketball, Track, English Club and Student Government, I barely had time to pee. So with that being said, I put my dreams of being a published author to the side to make the money I currently needed. However I was happy to have my work in the hands of my peers.

Graduating from Newberry High School in 2007, I was officially ready for the big world out there. Or so I thought, until I realized that tearing the ligaments in my ankle made going to college on a sports scholarship hard.

So I decided to take a year off from sports, and decided to go to Piedmont Technical College. After doing rehab on my ankle at Newberry Hospital and completing my first year of college at Piedmont. I decided to give Newberry College a try on a scholarship for cross country.
